On Top with Top Notch

0 e9ff6By George L. Nitti

It is important to remember some of the basics in graphic design, whether you are working on a blockbuster budget or on a shoestring.

One is to keep the company name first and foremost. Another is to use contrast. Finally, to repeat and highlight what you would like others to remember.

At Top Notch Towing, located in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, the basics come into focus on their custom-painted 2001 International 4700 with a 21-ft. Century steel bed.

Derrick Bryan started the company 10 years ago.

"I named the company 'Top Notch'," he said, "because I wanted my company to stand out above the other tow companies in the Virgin Islands. I wanted to be on top."

The company name is custom-painted on the side doors, standing out in red and white, upper-case lettering. The name is also written on the top of the front windows and on the back of the flatbed, adding to its memorability.

Helping the name stand out are several contrasting elements.

For example, inside the "Top Notch" lettering, a white line is painted through it, helping the name to pop as it is written next to red lettering.

Adding more contrast to the design is a silver diamond plate on which the "Top Notch" name sits. The texture of the diamond plate provides further contrast against the all-red background of the truck.

The black, scripted lettering of "Towing" distinguishes itself utilizing a unique font and contrasts well with the truck's colors. The white lettering of the phone number is prominent and is repeated in several places.

Keeping the company name first and foremost, using contrast and repeating key elements are basics to good, "top notch" graphic design.
