Wings of Flight

Since 2007, McKinney's Towing and Road Service of Dover, Delaware, has been custom-painting its tow trucks with the stars and stripes, American flag, beautifully rendered images of the American Eagle and other patriotic flavors.
According to owner Mac McKinney, a multitude of factors have been at play.

"In 2007, I bought one or two trucks that had patriotic themes," McKinney said. "I went to Chuck Danber of Jack of Arts Studios with a design that I had on a Peterbilt with a post 9/11 flag-type background. I told him I wanted to use that theme, emphasizing 9/11. We hit it good because of that and I have been using him ever since."

Dover Air Force Base is close by, where McKinney's provides recovery services, and two of McKinney's sons have served in the military.

Their 2019 Peterbilt 389 with a 75-ton Century rotator, which was exhibited last month at the American Towman Exposition, carries on in that same tradition.

The design has many outstanding features. It has a gorgeous clear coat and lacquer blue background, and a long red and white cascading ribbon pulled by an American Eagle that flows along its sides.

Danber said, "I have always done eagles and skies. I like to make it look pretty."

Inside the flowing ribbon, the company name stands out, as do the many white stars placed around the unit, appearing as if they are in motion.

"I pulled the star tips back and made two or three points longer to give it that effect," Danber said. "Some of the stars are shooting off like a comet."

On the hood is a large digital symbol of an Air Force wing.

The rotator was custom-painted in a mind-boggling three days.

Danber said, "We got it on Tuesday and had it finished on Friday. We worked a lot of hours with a couple of guys going at it full-time."

"It wasn't started until the week of the show," McKinney said. "It was awesome. I was surprised when they said it was ready. I didn't think it was going to happen. And they delivered it."
